The Older I Get The Funnier I Was is Whitmer
Thomas's sophomore album, released in 2022. This alternative indie pop record marks a significant evolution in the artist's
musical approach and thematic
focus. Following the success of his HBO special The
Golden One and its accompanying album,
Thomas shifted away from the darker, more introspective sonic palette that characterized his earlier work. The album reflects a deliberate artistic choice to embrace a more natural and authentic vocal style, moving beyond the Ian Curtis-inspired vocal delivery of his previous efforts.
Thomas discovered old recordings of his mother while visiting his hometown of Gulf Shores, Alabama, which profoundly influenced his creative direction for this project. He decided to collaborate with Melina Duterte, known for her work with Jay Som, Bachelor, and Routine, to help mix these archival recordings and establish
the sound for the new album.
The album operates as a meditation on time, memory, and the passage of years, exploring how humor and perspective evolve with age. While not explicitly focused on his mother in the way The
Golden One was, her presence permeates the work throughout.
Thomas's approach to songwriting and production on this record demonstrates greater warmth and accessibility compared to his previous darkwave-influenced material. The album combines comedy with genuine musicality in
Thomas's signature style, blending alternative indie rock sensibilities with his unique comedic sensibility. Released on colored
vinyl, the record represents a mature artistic statement from the Alabama-born musician and comedian, showcasing his growth as both a performer and composer while maintaining the emotional vulnerability and observational humor that define his work.
