The Harry Partch Collection Volume 1 is een cruciaal album dat de innovatieve microtonale composities van Harry Partch laat horen, de componist, instrumentuitvinder en uitvoerder die centraal stond bij de totstandkoming ervan. Het album werd in 1997 uitgebracht door New World Records als een heruitgave van originele opnames uit de jaren '50 van kleine labels zoals CRI. Het bevat werken uit Partchs "derde periode", waarin hij een 43-toons toonladder introduceerde die afweek van de traditionele chromatische structuur met 12 halve tonen, waarbij hij het avant-gardistische experimentalisme van de klassieke muziek vermengde met zijn fascinatie voor gesproken woord intonaties uit het hobo-tijdperk. Partch zelf levert idiosyncratische vocale elementen, ondersteund door zijn zelfgebouwde instrumenten bespeeld door toegewijde ensembles waaronder het Gate 5 Ensemble onder Horace Schwartz, met de nadruk op danstheater en ritmische fijne kneepjes in deze definitieve documentatie van zijn evoluerende microtonale taal.

Deze uitvoeringen benadrukken Partchs verschuiving naar instrumentale focus na 1950, met zelf geïntoneerde teksten en percussieve dansen die muzikale conventies satiriseren terwijl ze thema's als mythologie, ballingschap en menselijke reizen verkennen door middel van over elkaar heen liggende ritmes en onzinversjes die met ernstige precisie worden gebracht.
